Garry Herbert MBE
In 1992 Garry Herbert won an Olympic Gold Medal with the Searle brothers in the coxed pairs event where they dramatically beat the then reigning world and Olympic champions. Garry’s crew also won gold at the World Championships the following year. He went on to cox the British eight at the 1994 and 1995 World Championships and the 1996 Olympic Games.
Since then Garry has been a principal commentator for rowing for BBC Sport at both the Sydney and Athens Olympic Games. His engaging style has been much appreciated by both fans and casual followers of the sport. Of Garry’s commentary, Robert Philip of The Daily Telegraph wrote in August 2004, ‘Garry Herbert makes Murray Walker sound as though he is running on mogadon.’
On retiring from sport Garry worked initially as a barrister before moving to Goldman Sachs Private Wealth Management in 2006.
